Best for: Projects 40+ hours where client wants visibility into progress (split into 3 milestones)

1

Base price (hours × rate)

base = estimatedHours × targetHourlyRate

40 hrs × $125.00/hr

= $5,000

2

Fixed price with risk multiplier

fixed = base × riskMultiplier + revisionBuffer

$5,000 × 1.15 + $800

= $6,550

Risk multiplier: medium (1.15×). Revision buffer: 8% × 2 rounds.

3

Retainer (monthly minimum)

retainer = minHours × rate / month

20 hrs × $125.00/hr

= $2,500/mo

Key insight

Most freelancers undercharge on fixed-price projects because they forget two things: the risk multiplier for scope uncertainty, and the revision buffer. Every revision round eats 8–15% of your margin. Price it in upfront or put hard limits in the contract — 'two rounds of revisions included' protects you legally and financially.
